Passage 11-12

古之所謂善用兵者, 能使敵人前後不相及, 衆寡不相恃, 貴賤不相救, 上下不相收, 卒離而不集, 兵合而不齊. 合於利而動, 不合於利而止.

The ancient masters of war could make the enemy’s front and rear unable to support each other, large and small forces unable to rely on each other, officers and troops unable to aid each other, superiors and subordinates unable to coordinate. They kept the enemy scattered and, even when gathered, disorganized. They acted when advantageous; halted when not.
